     The climate of the peninsula varies from north to south on the one hand, and between the lowlands and mountainous areas on the other. Winter is long and rigorous in the Alps, where snow begins to fall in November. The northern regions are characterized by cold winters and hot summers. Temperatures become milder as we descend towards the South, which is in general Mediterranean climate. The sirocco, a dry wind and very hot from the Sahara, blows from the south of Rome.
